Review of The Equaliser 3: A predictable yet compelling action thriller

The series' concluding episode serves as a fitting capstone for Denzel Washington's final performance as reluctant vigilante Robert McCall.

In Hollywood, this year is unquestionably the year of the action thriller and the classic sequel. Celebrity actors are demonstrating why they have remained at the top of their profession for so long.

This year's high point has been their continued existence. Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt is in no hurry to wrap things up, but Denzel Washington's outstanding screen presence makes it exciting to watch him in his final role as the Equaliser. Although not inventive, it is enjoyable.

Denzel Washington's reserve and turbulence are used to the best effect by director Antoine Fuqua, who has worked with the actor on the previous two films and a few others. Even though the script adheres to familiar territory, it is the actor who captures your intrigue and attention.

When McCall learns that his pals are being controlled by mafia lords in this picture-perfect Italian setting, he is compelled to return to their world. He remains an enigmatic figure dressed in all black and exploits his superhuman fighting prowess to defend the populace and his chosen town at all costs.
He also gets to see Dakota Fanning again in the movie after 20 years.

In a vicious action thriller that ramps up the brutality while maintaining the underlying feeling of community and justice, Fuqua places Denzel against the local mafia. Even though the pace is kept up from the first two films, as the story enters its final stretch, you don't feel worn out by the action and brutal bloodshed.

A spooky musical score by Marcelo Zarvos creates the atmosphere for a tense action thriller with heart. The main character is far more complex than before, with the emphasis even shifting to age, mental health, and the guilt that results from the violence. A fantastic opening sequence and a twist at the end are also included.

It all works out in the Equaliser trilogy. Keep an eye out for Denzel Washington, an actor who consistently brings his roles to life.
