The anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan's birth is celebrated in India as Shikshak Diwas, or Teachers' Day. First Vice President and second President of India were both Dr. Radhakrishnan. On September 5, 1888, he was born in Tiruttani, Tamil Nadu. He was a scholar and philosopher who also received the Bharat Ratna award. 

After Dr. Radhakrishnan was chosen as the President of India in 1962, some students requested that they be permitted to celebrate his birthday. Instead, Dr. Radhakrishnan advised that they observe it as Teachers' Day. Since that time, September 5 has been designated as Teachers' Day.
